Adult Educator Opportunity to Use OERs

We’re looking for Adult Education Math or Science Instructors to help us evaluate STEM Open Education Resources!

What: The American Institutes for Research has recently been awarded a contract from the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Vocational and Adult Education to support the use of open education resources (OERs) to strengthen science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) within adult education settings.

Why: OERs are digital teaching and learning materials of all types, including text, videos, games, and assessments that are freely available and adaptable for use in any educational setting for all types of learners. The abundance of STEM OERs presents opportunities for educators and learners; however, there are challenges to identifying and selecting OERs and ensuring that they are high quality resources. In addition, educators must select the STEM OERs that best meet the needs of their adult learners.

Who: We are seeking interested math or science instructors of adult learners to join a user group for up to six months to identify, use, and evaluate these STEM OERs. User group members will use these resources in their classrooms or as part of their instruction, share feedback, and provide reviews. We will support the user groups through monthly online check-ins facilitated by science, math, and evaluation experts to review progress, experiences, and challenges as well as to gather evaluative feedback. Upon the completion of four OER reviews, each user group member will receive a $200 honorarium. Upon completion of a fifth OER review, each user group member will receive a $100 honorarium.

When: We will select up to twelve math and twelve science user group members and we will notify selected members by early January. The User Group work will begin in March 2013 and continue for up to six months.

How to apply: If you are currently working as a mathematics or science instructor in any adult education program, alternative high school, or developmental college classroom, please apply by November 2, 2012 online at: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/OERSTEM. You will be asked to submit a copy of your current resume.
