Let’s Talk Phonics! (Discussion)

One great way to learn a new skill is to watch others apply it first. Join LINCS Community moderators as they present videos of real instructors modeling strategies with learners in phonics, one of the essential components of reading.  Afterwards, participate in a discussion thread to explore new learnings, debate techniques, and acquire more information. Kathy St. John, a LINCS National Trainer and the former supervisor of Read Santa Clara, will be a guest participant and help facilitate the discussion.

This WIOA aligned activity starts on August 27 at 8am and lasts six days!  It will feature six short videos created by Partners in Reading, Read Santa Clara, and the California State Library, covering one specific phonics decoding technique per day. Each day’s dialogue will also include overviews of additional LINCS resources on incorporating the teaching of phonics. All resources are freely accessible online and highlight instructional phonics resources (e.g. cards, scrabble letters, phoneme “cups”), as well as substantiate the evidence base for good models of practice (e.g. developing patterns & routines and keeping lessons short). Instructors and tutors can learn new, or build upon existing techniques to implement effective strategies in phonics instruction and informal assessments.  Administrators and professional developers can use this knowledge when designing reading programs and supporting instruction.

To participate, please join one or more of the LINCS Community Reading and Writing Group, the Teaching and Learning Group, or the Professional Development Group –  by going to the LINCS community page and clicking on the group(s).

If you require special accommodations, please call 301-828-1526 or email scoleman@manhattanstrategy.com 7-10 days in advance and we will do our best to assist you.
