Description:

Have you ever struggled with teaching rigorous math tasks to a classroom of mixed-ability students? Join Patricia Helmuth, a New York State Education Department Teacher Leader in Mathematics and a staff developer for the Hudson Valley Regional Adult Education Network, for an online discussion of how an adult education instructor can modify high-cognitive demand math tasks to engage a classroom of students at varied math levels. The activity will guide participants in discovering what adult learners already know about math and how to take them to a higher level and new understanding of mathematics. This model reinforces effective mathematical practices through lesson plans and lesson activities.

To prepare for the event, you may want to access The Apple Orchard slideshow and Push and Support Cards: A Bridge to Advanced Mathematics for the Multi-Level Adult Education Classroom Curriculum Guide.  You can watch the Jo Boaler video from YouCubed for an example of visual number talks.
