Hosted Discussion: Exploring the New LINCS Teaching Adults to Read Courses

Description: Wondering about best practice strategies for teaching adults to read? The recently updated LINCS Teaching Adults to Read courses explain reading strategy instruction for beginner, intermediate, and advanced adult readers. Throughout January, the Reading and Writing group will conduct discussions highlighting both courses. Join the discussion at: https://community.lincs.ed.gov/group/25.

Description: Join Dahlia Shaewitz of the Institute for Educational Leadership (IEL) to examine the current status of disability inclusion in Adult Education, identify strategies to create an inclusive classroom curriculum, and take a look at resources needed to support full inclusion of disabilities in learner contexts and materials.

Live Session: Texas' Adult Ed Med Video Project: Come See What the Fuss is All About!

Description: Come follow five adult education students as they upskill their way through 40 short video lessons tackling subjects like Digital Literacy and English Language Proficiency, and applying for jobs at the Adult Ed Med Hospital! Presenters will review this State Leadership Initiative from inception through project design, implementation, and curriculum development as well as the challenges of filming during a pandemic. Takeaways include access to videos and resources, including lesson plans and student handouts.

Live Session: Research Bites: Applying What We Know about Adult English Language Acquisition to What We Do

Description: What questions do you have about second language acquisition? Join us to learn about recent, relevant research findings in the field of adult second language acquisition (SLA) and how these findings can inform classroom practice. Dr. Sarah Young Knowles will lead a discussion around some fascinating “research bites” from recently published scholarly journals in a brief, digestible manner. Participants will be guided to generate their own questions about English learners’ language development.
