Live Session: Cross-Cultural Approaches to Digital Literacy
Description: Effective language acquisition rarely occurs in a vacuum. Often, approaches to language learning are rooted in cultural values and a society’s views on education. Digital literacy is not immune to this influence. If viewed as a new language, digital literacy is similarly impacted by the cultural and social needs that a learner brings into the classroom. Join our guest presenter, Sarah Haroon Sualehi, PhD Candidate, Texas A&M to explore what English language instructors can do to understand the social and cultural needs of your students and bridge gaps between learners and content from different cultural backgrounds. You will leave this interactive session with a better understanding of learning approaches in communal versus individualistic cultures, how culture impacts digital literacy learning and gain strategies to effectively tailor your support to learners from all backgrounds.
