COABE Journal: Prison Literacy and Pathways to Success

The March 2019 edition of the COABE Journal focuses on Prison Literacy.  The article, PATHWAY TO SUCCESS: CREATING INDIVIDUALIZED CAREER PATHWAYS FOR INMATES AND REENTRANTS.

If you have not read it, I encourage you to read about the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections' 60-hour “Pathway to Success” course for inmates enrolling in vocational coursework.  The piece highlights the use of the O*NET Interest Profiler by staff working to "show[ing] the inmates what jobs are available in their areas and providing hope for those getting ready to return to society" (57).

If you have read it, and are working in a correctional setting, it would be great to hear whether this program seems like it might be replicable within your setting?  If you aren't sure, what are your questions/challenges to figuring out whether it's possible?

Best,

Thanks for sharing this Mike,

There's a lot to unpack in this journal. We will have an informal discussion with the authors Sudie Whalen and Marion Thacher, from of Professional Learning Communities in Prisons on May 21st.

Join the Corrections and Re Entry Community of Practice while we explore these articles over the next few weeks.

Sincerely,
Kathy Tracey
