ED Announces Gainful Employment Negotiators

Recently, the U.S. Department of Education released the names of the negotiators who will be tasked with rewriting the federal gainful employment regulation. In June, Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos made the announcement that the department would engage in negotiated rulemaking on the issue. The negotiators were selected from among educators, business and industry groups, consumer advocates, and accreditors.

The Obama Administration implemented the gainful employment rule in 2015. It requires that all programs at for-profit colleges, as well as certificate programs at public institutions like community colleges, report to the department on metrics of student debt, employment and earnings. The Trump Administration pledged to revise the rule, and has delayed enforcement of several of its key reporting requirements. The department will host three public rulemaking sessions, with the first meeting taking place December 4-7, in Washington, D.C.
