A panel from the Welcoming Center for New Pennsylvanians will facilitate a webinar on Tuesday, January 26, 2016 from 3:00 to 4:00 PM (Eastern) and lead a follow up discussion (January 27-29) focused on serving immigrant professionals. The Welcoming Center has been a national leader in supporting skilled immigrants. The panel will share an effective model for working with immigrant professionals and address a number of challenges adult education programs struggle with related to serving this special population. They will suggest strategies for supporting skilled immigrants to move forward toward their career goals, including strategies to accelerate their language learning and professional skills. The issue of acculturation is a key consideration to be discussed.

Manuel Portillo -- Director of the Immigrant Professionals Program.
Manuel is a seasoned nonprofit leader who comes to the Welcoming Center after a substantive career in nonprofit program development and community organizing. Manuel is a 22-year Philadelphia resident who comes originally from Guatemala
Nicole Pumphrey – Director of Strategic Partnerships
Nicole is responsible for building relationships with employers, institutions of higher education, and other key stakeholders. She earned her B.A. in French and Korean Studies from the University of Pennsylvania and a Master of Science in Education in Intercultural Communication from Penn’s Graduate School of Education.
Elizabeth Wang – Education & Career Advisor
Elizabeth provides in-depth counseling to participants in the Immigrant Professionals Program. She is keenly interested in acculturation issues, and has firsthand experience of living in multiple countries. She was a practicing attorney in Beijing before coming to the US in 2013 to pursue a graduate degree at the University of Pennsylvania School of Law.
