MSI Convenings are short conferences intended to build collaborations and develop more robust methods for determining success of minority programs and initiatives so that colleges and universities can improve, obtain funding, and effect change at their institutions.Richland College’s MSI Convening, entitled “Minority Student Success: Using Data to Effect Change,” provides an opportunity for educators from across the nation to gather and discuss effective research, initiatives and programs that impact the academic success of students at Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs).

The Keynote Address on Friday morning will be provided by Dr. Tia Brown McNair, Vice President for Diversity, Equity, and Student Success at the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) in Washington, D.C.  Dr. McNair oversees both funded projects and AAC&U’s continuing programs on equity, inclusive excellence, high-impact educational practices, and student success, including AAC&U’s Network for Academic Renewal series of yearly working conferences. Her keynote address will guide the 2018 MSI Convening and inspire participants to share effective strategies and evidence based research for evaluating programs and initiatives that support minority student success.  Following the address, Dr. McNair will moderate a panel discussion among college presidents from across the nation to discuss current issues and challenges in improving minority student success in higher education.

Our Plenary Speaker on Saturday morning is Dr. Elva LeBlanc, Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost for Tarrant County College District. Dr. LeBlanc will discuss challenges in improving minority student success at community colleges and share data about the success of some of the initiatives and programs her college has implemented.
