Recruiting raters for Adult English Literacy Assessment (BEST Literacy) for session at CAL February 21

The Center for Applied Linguistics (CAL) is recruiting individuals to rate responses to a writing test for adult learners of English 

Raters will receive $175 for participating in a one-day rating session, in-person at CAL in Washington, DC.

When: 

  • Friday, February 21, 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m.
  • Lunch will be provided 

Where: 

  • CAL, 4646 40th Street NW, Washington, DC. A five-minute walk from the Tenleytown-AU Metro Station (Red Line)

Compensation:

  • $175 for participating in the one-day rating session

Serving as a rater will involve attending the one-day rating session at CAL and doing the following:

  • Signing a non-disclosure agreement and maintaining test security
  • Participating in rater training
  • Completing and passing a rater quiz (can be attempted more than once)
  • Rating assigned Writing tasks

All training and rating will take place at CAL during the one-day session.

Item Writer Requirements

  • Availability to attend the full rating session at CAL on February 21 from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
  • High level of English proficiency
  • Ability to enter scores electronically into MS Excel and navigate online filesharing systems

Desired qualifications:

  • Experience rating Writing tests
  • Experience working with beginning-level adult English language learners
  • Familiarity with adult ESL curriculum and instruction for such learners
  • Completed or current graduate studies in a related field (e.g., linguistics, TESOL)
