Advocating for Adult Education Learners with Disabilities: A How-To Accommodations Guide for Educators and Disability Service Professionals

Thursday, June 26 - 3:00 PM - 4:45 PM ET   •  Hosted by David Haugen. M.Ed, MPNA

Description: In this hour and 45 minute session, the accommodation process will be reviewed from start to finish in order that advocates and adult educators can better interpret the documentation guidelines, request forms and review process. Attention will be directed mainly at the GED test, but also at the HiSET and TASC equivalency exams in order that comparisons can be made across all vendors, as they may pertain to accessibility /accommodations. The webinar provides many screen shots of sample requests/documentation examples and outlines what exactly is needed for a request to be considered complete (i.e. rationale, functional limitations). The session concludes with a broader overview of the ADA legislation and a consideration of additional measures to assist/advocate for learners beyond applying for accommodations.

By the end of the session, participants will be able to:

• Identify some of the differences between the GED, HiSET and TASC exams with respect to accommodations/accessibility
• Recognize the changes to the process and request forms/guidelines
• Identify what documentation may be necessary for a complete request
• Understand the underlying legal background surrounding the ADA/accommodations.
