Supporting Rural Students

For a number of institutions in the minority-serving community college community, connecting students with the services and workforce connections that they need to succeed can be challenging in rural or frontier areas.

A recent article in Diverse Issues in Higher Education published a review of recent research on this topic that can be accessed here.

Among the recommendations of this article are advice on how to:

  • Develop of financial aid advising resources specifically targeted to the needs of rural students.
  • Recognize and acknowledge the role of parents in rural students' goals and students' need to balance school and home life.
  • Address the perception that rural is "sub-par" and that pursuing career and economic opportunities implies abandonment of a home community.
