Earth Science Week 2015

Since 1998 the American Geosciences Institute has conducted an Earth Science Week in early October.  Each year the focus is on a different topic in earth systems science.  This year the week runs from October 11-17, though the activities are useful year-round and will be available the 2015-2016 academic year.

Beginning a class session

Through the years, I’ve had many conversations with adult education instructors about ways in which to start a class session.  Often these conversations include the desire to introduce content and topics into an already overcrowded curriculum. There is also a wish to integrate subject matter with skills in observation, description, hypothesizing, and written/oral communication.  And this is to be done in a short period of time, so that the group can move on to “regular class activities”. What a tall order!! 

The Christmas Flood of 1964: Floods and Flood Preparedness Fifty Years Later

December 1964 and January 1965 saw extreme flooding in Oregon, Idaho, California, Washington, and Nevada.
