2016 HSE Test Scores: Up, Down or the Same?

Colleagues,

HSE Test Results -- 2016 Scores Up, Down or the Same?

Colleagues,

How HSE Programs are Responding to the Difficulty of the GED® 2014 Exam

Colleagues,

I would like to start a new discussion thread specifically on how adult secondary education programs are responding to the low pass rate (many/most) ASE/HSE/GED® programs are experiencing as they send students whom they believe to be prepared, to take the GED2014® series exam.

Writing on the new GED®

Good afternoon, friends, I was initially pleased to hear that the new GED® test would require a higher standard for writing compared to the previous version of the test. I always thought the previous writing standards were far too low to prepare students for work that required any writing and especially for postsecondary education.

Computers scoring responses to writing prompts--?

Hello friends, I just heard that there are studies underway in which computers are scoring the test takers’ responses to writing prompts on the 2014 GED® test. My understanding is that so far the computers are scoring the writing quite similarly to human beings. I was surprised to learn that computers could be programmed to do this kind of complex task, and I’m curious how it actually works.

What do you think?

Words of Wisdom

Hello Colleagues,

I had an opportunity recently to talk with an adult educator about the new GED®.  This instructor outlined all the changes that she recently implemented in her classroom. She asked me this question: “How can I help my students feel less overwhelmed when I am feeling the very same way?”  What would you say to that instructor?  Have any of you encountered this situation?

2013 - Year in Review

Dear Colleagues,

A very happy new year to you!

High School EquivalencyTesting in 2014

Happy New Year, colleagues!

Some of you have, no doubt, been preparing students for one of the new high school equivalency tests for several weeks. Now that the holidays have passed, it's time for many of us to focus on this goal in earnest.

What has been your experience so far?  What resources are you finding helpful? What adjustments are you making to your instruction? What challenges, if any, are you encountering? How are students responding?

It's plenty cold here in southeastern Pennsylvania. I hope everyone is staying warm!

Cheers, Susan
