English spelling as an educational handicap

 

One thing which constantly strikes me about discussions on how best to improve reading and writing standards in English-speaking countries is that they generally give no thought to making the acquisition of those skills easier  by reducing some of the many  inconsistencies of English (man – many, cf. pen - penny) which are responsible for making both learning to read and write the language exceptionally difficult and time-consuming.
