Conversation English for Int - Adv learners

Colleagues -

A friend is teaching a conversation class to a group of int - adv adult English learners and asked for a recommendation of a good textbook.  Does anyone have any suggestions? The learners are part of a diplomatic community at one of our embassies in Europe.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

Hi Susan, here are a couple of web sites that have good suggestions and some accompanying worksheet activities for conversation topics. I recently sent these to a friend in Canada who is coordinating a conversation class for spouses of embassy officials who want to learn English.  She's indicated that they have been helpful.

The first one, English Club at https://www.englishclub.com/esl-worksheets/conversation/  has several topics under each heading and an associated worksheet that often explains and gives students practice with idioms. Also, some of the worksheets will direct you back to their home page "TP Homework" section where there are some readings to accompany the conversation starters.

The 2nd one  is at: http://iteslj.org/questions/ - it lists conversation-starting questions by topic - so if you choose a single topic, you'll get a list of a few questions to ask to keep the conversation going.

Another good source for conversation starters is Ted Talks (tedtalks.com)  but you may wish  to filter the search by duration of the talk  (I usually use ones less than 6-7 minutes long) and by "English" language. There are thousands of topics and talks there.

These aren't new resources, but do lend themselves well to conversation starters.
Take care,
Rhea
