I am posting to share information about a new service-learning course offered by Designers for Learning, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. This project-based course is designed as an opportunity to "gain experience for good". Participants in the free online course will gain instructional design experience, and support high quality resource development for adult education. As the final project in the course, participants will create and share open educational resources (OER) for adult education that are aligned to the College and Career Readiness Standards.
There are no prerequisites to join, and the course is free. This is great opportunity to not only learn new skills, but also to contribute to adult education. Jennifer, thanks so much for sharing this with the EBPD Group. For those newer to the group, in 2015 we hosted two discussions of Open Educational Resources with guests Dahlia Shaewitz, Dr. Tara Myers, and Amanda Duffy from the American Institutes for Research (AIR). (See Open Educational Resources: Working Together to Evaluate and Promote High Quality Resources in the Classroom and Open Educational Resources (OER): How Can These Free Resources be Used for ESL Teaching and Learning?)
Given the relative lack of lessons aligned to the CCRS, this should be a very useful course. I encourage you to check it out. If you participate, to let us know how the course went and share your lessons with us!

Yes ... Amanda Duffy is a fantastic person to have in the network. She is serving as a subject matter expert for our course, and has steered us to countless valuable resources as we designed the course, including this community! As you note, our course purpose is to add free and openly licensed instructional materials aligned to the CCRS to OER Commons. Thank you for the reply!
Further to our discussion, enrollment is now open for Designers for Learning's next free instructional design course. This 12-week course will take place September 12 – December 4, 2016 on Canvas Network, a massive open online course (MOOC) platform. As a professional development opportunity, this course is an excellent way to hone your instructional design skills while networking with other professionals in the adult education and instructional design fields. Once again, the focus of this service-learning experience (i.e. gain experience for good) will be the design and development of open educational resources (OER) for adult basic education. Further enticement ... Leecy Wise and Amanda Duffy are superstar facilitators in the MOOC, and will be joining us again this fall! Yay!

This free service-MOOC offers a guided experiential learning opportunity for those seeking instructional design professional development. Over 2,000 participants enrolled in the prior implementation of this free course that centers on the design and development of open educational resources (OER) for adult basic education (ABE) aligned to the College and Career Readiness Standards. In this project-based MOOC, you will network with others in the adult education and instructional design fields, and gain instructional design experience while developing educational materials that will be made available for free to adult educators and learners on OER Commons and Canvas Commons.
