These helpful techniques  for parents are shared by "expert adolescent psychologist, best-selling author, monthly New York Times columnist and mother of two Dr. Lisa Damour."

Of course, these tips are relevant to all of us who share our lives with kids.

The 6 ways include the following:

  1. Be calm and proactive
  2. Stick to a routine
  3. Let your child feel emotions
  4. Check in with them about what they are hearing
  5. Create welcome distractions
  6. Monitor your own behavior

Check out the website for details around each of these recommendations. There are many additional resources on this site that teachers and learners may find useful.

Please share your impressions of these materials as well as any other resources on this timely topic.

Please stay safe during this uncertain, friends.

Hello colleagues, The National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) has made some practical suggestions for ways to communicate with children about COVID-19. Of course, every parent determines what is most appropriate for their family, and the ages of the children is an important part of that consideration.

Among the NASP's suggestions are:

  • Stay calm, listen and offer assurance
  • Monitor television viewing and social media
  • Take time to talk
  • Be honest and accurate
  • Keep explanations age-appropriate
  • Stay connected to  children's school
  • Know the symptoms of COVID-19
  • Model basic hygiene and basic healthy lifestyle practices
  • Be aware of chilidren's mental health

You can read more details about each of these suggestions at the link. As you encounter additional relevant resources to support parents and kids, please link us to them here.

Stay safe, Susan Finn Miller
