How do you use partnerships?

How do you use partnerships?  (Are your partners involved in curriculum development?  Professional Development?  Recruitment & Retention?  Workbased Learning?)

Debbie - you asked how we use partnerships....for my work, and my focus on youth transition - especially related to accessible transportation - it is important for me to facilitate partnerships across education and transit sectors. I know that educators can't do this alone - and when I am trying to establish partnerships I think about leveraging the resources and knowledge that a partner can offer....we all have expertise and resources that can contribute to the process - and ultimately outcomes for students with disabilities. I try to highlight these "win win" opportunities for all. <?xml:namespace prefix = o />

Educators (whether it’s a K12 or adult education) don't always think about partnerships with atypical kinds of colleagues - such as transit organizations. It may be natural for educators to think about working with human services organizations, employer, rehabilitation, etc. - but, its not typical for educators to work with transportation colleagues to ensure that students have transit supports to facilitate their participation in education, careers, or independent living. Usually - I use examples of communities who have established these partnerships as a catalyst to build new relationships....not easy sometimes - but, necessary.

Thanks for the opportunity to share my thinking on building partnerships.

I just noticed this post, and even though it was posted over a week ago, it is pertinent to the topic of the week that the Career Pathways and Postsecondary Completion groups are featuring this week.  Our announced topic is "Building Strategic Partnerships" and your example of building a partnership with the transit sector in order to facilitate opportunities for our clients is exactly the kind of partnerships we are talking about.  All this week in both the Career Pathways and Postsecondary Completion groups we will be sharing resources such as webcasts, online courses, reports and studies, etc. on this topic, and I invite you and any others interested to join us!

I work at a Career Tech Center for high schoolers.  They attend our school for alf of their school day and learn skills for a pathway/career.

My job at the tech center is to create partnerships with Post-Secondary partners so that students get credit for the work they've already done (Articulation Agreements). This helps students get a start in their pathway before they graduate high school.  It helps Post-Secondary institutions recruit students who are looking to go into specific fields.

We also have a placement specialist who helps students find intenships, work studies, and other WBL opportunities in the community.

Our programs all have advisory committees that involve local career/industry members, post-secondary members, and other relevant community members.
