Looking for Easy-to-Read Newspapers

Does anyone know of an Easy-to-Read newspaper? I am looking for real news for those with lower levels of English literacy.

Thanks!

David,

The Times in Plain English is not associated with the New York Times. It is news from a variety of sources rewritten in simple language.

Thanks for the clarification, Terrie. I knew this was not an official New York Times publication, but I had missed that not all the articles were adaptations of New York Times articles. I wrongly assumed since the font was the same as the New York Times that the articles also were all from the New York Times.

I wonder if adult education teachers are using this resource with their students and, if so, how they like it.

I also recommend News for You online. My intermediate readers enjoy the articles and exercises. I've found that it also works well for the ESL students and high beginning readers who sometimes end up in my intermediate ABE classes, since they can choose to listen to the articles--either the whole thing at once or one sentence at a time.

Some of my students enjoy the weekly crossword puzzle as well, which can be fairly challenging since there isn't a comprehensive word bank. It's a great activity for two students to work on together.

Easy English News is a terrific resource because there is a guide to using it in the classroom and each month there are quizzes, clozes and other resources available online for teachers to use, to adapt and combine with the reading material. There is a crossword puzzle in each issue and a glossary of terms of bold-faced words in the back of each paper. There are current events, but also topics related to American culture.

Thanks for the go0d recommendations. Here are a few related sites.

http://www.newsinlevels.com - I've never tried this site, but it looks like it would be useful. As with all resources assigned to students, passages will take some review before assigning them to students.

http://www.english-online.at/ "This website is specially designed for learners of English. The articles are carefully chosen and rewritten, so that they can be more easily understood. Each article has a vocabulary list at the end. Presently there are a thousand topics and special news articles in various categories."

Hi Julie.

I use News for You in our ESL classrooms.  They have many great articles that meet most students' needs.

Scholastic has many magazines that can be used with lower EFLs.  We also use Scholastic Scope, and they offer a wide range of genres, including informational and narrative nonfiction, short fiction, infographics, debates, speeches, and dramas based on myths, classic literature, and history.

Hope you are able to find some great resources!

Hi, try Easy English TIMES. It's for multi-level classes. Love the student writing published. See www.easyenglishtimes.com. Been published for more than 20 years.

Juile and Other Contributors here, in last year's COABE conference, Nell Eckersley, I believe, introduced me to paper.li, which provides wonderful resources to compile and publish news articles on a regular basis. Those can then be read by students or colleagues, depending on one's interest and ability.  What Is Paper.li?

To get started, go to http://paper.li/ and watch the video. There is also a fee-based registration for non-personal publications.

The process is super simple, and the newspapers look very professional! For beginning readers or ELLs, papers could be directed at low-level readers, couldn't they?

Has anyone here used paper.li? Tell us about it! Share some of your papers with us! Thanks, Leecy
