Individualized Learning Plans

In January, the Youth and Adult Pathways microgroup focused on career planning and Individualized Learning Plans was a key topic of discussion. This week, the US Department of Labor, Office of Disability Employment Policy released some resources regarding ILPs.

Take a look - interesting and useful materials!

Judy,

I'm so glad you brought the topic of Individualized Learning Plans (ILP) to our attention. I recently did a bit of research on ILPs and have concluded that every education system should implement them, starting in elementary school. The ownership and direction they give a student, along with the collaborative effort of families and educators is proving to be a positive change in an education system.  They do not take place of an Individual Education Plan and are implemented to the whole school population.  These would be a good tool to use with at-risk and adult learners.

Here are a few websites I found interesting:

Wow Marcie...I guess you did do research. Thank you for all of these resources! I totally agree with you about ILPs across grades. Researchers are just examining the impact of using ILPs in K12 and the connection with postschool outcomes. So keep on the look out for these data. Thanks for sharing.

I have often shared the need for creating a learning plan with students and how it is directly linked to student retention. I think the individual learning plan should consist of two distinct pieces - a targeted academic plan and a specific study plan.

Often, our students need help in planning their study time. I require my students to complete a study plan and identify when they will devote time to their goals. By linking both parts of an ILP to the student's goals, I have seen a significant increase in student retention. They have clearly defined steps for preparation with a realistic time line.

Thanks for sharing this information.

I wanted to highlight a resource in the LINCS course portal.  The Integrating Career Counseling and Planning in Adult Education Course is available for free and teaches you how to implement an individual career development plan...the majority of adult education students entering a program are either employed and wanting to keep their job or improve it or are unemployed and looking for a career.  I think contextualizing academic planning within career planning is critical for the total future success of our students.

Check out the course on the LINCS site!  http://lincs.ed.gov/courses
