“Don’t Fry Day” is May 27!

Dear Colleagues:

May is Melanoma/Skin Cancer Detection Month.

The National Council on Skin Cancer Prevention has dubbed the Friday (May 27) before Memorial Day as “Don’t Fry Day” – a day to encourage sun safety awareness and to remind everyone to protect their skin while enjoying the outdoors.  Resources include a script that you and your students can use to create a public service message to share with friends and family (or, write your own!).

Make your own video using the Council’s 30 second video script to remind people to “Slip, Slop, Slap, and Wrap”.

There are newer videos but in this older video, the narration is slower and it does a good job of showing how sunscreen works and how to select a sunscreen product:  How Sunscreen Works. (YouTube version)

The American Academy of Dermatologists has created the May 2016 Toolkit that provides a wide variety of information and additional links about getting the word out about skin cancer, the cause of sun damage, etc.  Lastly, for you and any adult secondary students' inner science geek, here's A Guide to the UV Index.
