"5 Reasons People Share Fake Photos During Natural Disasters"

Hello colleagues, Here's a link to high school English Language Arts teacher Kelly Gallagher's most recent Article of the Week,"5 Reasons People Share Fake Photos During Natural Disasters,"  by A.J. Willingham for CNN.com. Students in Gallagher's class will do a close reading of this article by annotating as they read. They will then select a prompt to respond to in writing.  For example:

  • In this “age of misinformation,” how do you know what you read is true? Explain.
  • What steps might you take to protect yourself from “confirmation bias”? Explain.

Besides this being a timely as well as a pretty fascinating topic, what are your thoughts about a reading and writing assignment like this? Pros? Cons?

Cheers, Susan Finn Miller
