Academic Writing in Non-Formal Programs

If you participated in the first rich panel discussion on Teaching Academic Writing To English Learners, and I hope you did, you are aware that one of the threads developed in that discussion was how to transition adult ESL or ABE students into academic writing by having them practice argumentative thinking and expression very early in their Adult Ed experience, not necessarily in formal paragraph or essay writing but by providing simple responses to questions that lead to argument.

Federally-funded programs certainly now require that students prepare for higher level academic and workplace performance. What about non-formal programs that do not receive federal funding? If you teach in ESL or ABE in non-formal programs that don't necessarily strive to meet WIOA requirements of the recently published CCRS standards, do you still strive to prepare students to write academically, as proposed in our continuing series on Teaching Academic Writing To English Learners? What is your approach?
