Adult Education Degree and Credentialing Programs

Colleagues,

For years adult education practitioners who have sought adult education degrees or credentials in higher education have wondered where to find information on these programs. Until now the best resource has been on the ALE Wiki at http://wiki.literacytent.org/index.php/University_Degree_Programs, but now there is a new resource, sponsored by COABE, in partnership with TESOL International Association, the American Institutes for Research, the American Association for Adult and Continuing Education, the National Adult Educational Professional Development Consortium, and the Coalition of Lifelong Learning Organizations:

It's called the Adult Education Degree and Credentialing Programs Portal .

This online database is searchable by institution, state, degree program, specialty area, level of degree, delivery mode, and certification. Not only can you search as a potential student for higher education professional development programs in adult education, but as a program faculty or staff member you can submit or update your program's listing.

I learned of the portal today, searched the database to try it out, and was impressed by its extensiveness.

If you are interested in pursuing a higher education credential or degree in adult education, this would be a good resource.

Kudos to the developers: Jackie Taylor, Marie Cora, Rob Lawrence and Tim Ponder, and to its sponsoring organizations.

Hi David, thanks for bringing this to everyone's attention!  We do think this is a great resource and are very excited for its launch.  It was a big collaborative effort that included seeking out and contacting all the institutions that are presently in the portal database.  We hope to be able to add more information as the field becomes familiar with the Portal and begins to use it.

If any of you are going to COABE in New Orleans this March, please attend a session on the Portal presented by Jackie Taylor and myself.  It will be: Wednesday, March 27 at 3:30.

Hope to see you there!

Thank you, David! It was a labor of love for sure.

And EBPD colleagues here may be interested to know that the idea for this Portal came directly from our online guest discussion of Teacher Certification and Credentialing in Adult Education held on the Professional Development List, Summer 2011.

You can find information and resources from that discussion, as well as the complete transcripts, online here:

I am interested to know if others here think that the need/interest in teacher certification and credentialing in adult education has changed in some way since 2011. And if so, how? Second, have there been other efforts under way since 2011 in professionalizing the field?
