Good morning, everyone!
I wanted to share with you some additional resources that might prove useful in getting started with ANI in your classroom. Often, some of the quickest adjustments can be made in how we ask questions of our students. I encourage you to watch the 5-minute video by Annie Fetter below to get a sense for the influence open-ended questions can have on our students. From there you might check out the specific page numbers in the resources I provided for some quick starter phrases for using open-ended questions and to keep students engaged with an activity or problem. Finally, I added a reference about Concrete --> Representational --> Abstract (CRA) instructional strategies for those who might want to see how this connected with our popcorn activity on Day 2.

Deeper Learning Through Questioning
- Quick reference guide; great suggestions for open-ended questions on pp. 4-5 --> Asking Effective Questions: Provoking Student Thinking/Deepening Conceptual Understanding in the Mathematics Classroom
- Good starter phrases on pp. 8-10; also has some great ideas for troubleshooting issues that might come up with questioning --> Promoting Mathematical Thinking and Discussion With Effective Questing Strategies
- See pages 12-17 for a look at how to increase communication in the classroom using the About How Many – String Station activity from Day 1 of Institute 1.
- See pages 26-28 for more information about moving from Concrete --> Representational --> Abstract (CRA) using the volume of popcorn cylinders problem from Day 2 of Institute 1.
Best wishes as you get started with ANI in your classrooms!
