Announcing EU Speak's Reading in a LESLLA Context Online Module

Announcing Reading in a LESLLA Context, an online module for second language teachers and tutors. The module runs 13 May to 31 July, 2020

The EU-Speak Board is pleased to announce the May 2020 start of Reading in a LESLLA Context, an online, self-paced module for teachers and tutors. The module is hosted on a Moodle platform and is offered in five languages: English, Finnish, German, Spanish, and Turkish. For details about this module and five additional modules, visit https://research.ncl.ac.uk/eu-speak/. It is aimed at those who work with LESLLA learners, adults who are learning to read and write for the first time in a new language. LESLLA (Literacy Education and Second Language Learning for Adults) is the international organization dedicated to research on and teaching of these adults.

Modules run for six weeks, and this spring sees the addition of a seventh week at the end for a workshop on writing fiction books for these learners. Reading in a LESLLA Context addresses reading from a psycholinguistic perspective. Its approach is theoretical and practical. Through relevant research, participants will explore how the mind is involved in learning to read and will learn about ways to measure reading skills, implement innovative teaching methods, and select and adapt materials for helping learners decode words and comprehend texts that they read.

Reading in a LESLLA Context is appropriate for teachers and tutors with little formal training or preparation for working with LESLLA learners although all language teachers and tutors are welcome.
