August Solar Eclipse: Observe, Read, Write

We know that science is based on observation and reflection. The best reading and writing also result from observation and reflection, don't they? Is that true of all disciplines?

I was just informed about the upcoming event on August 21st: a total solar eclipse which will cover our entire continent! The last time we had a chance to observe such a display was in 1918, slightly before my time.  :)

Observation is the chosen learning tool among many cultures. First observe and learn; when you know, then apply. Reflection is also how many cultures process information. Before some students answer, they reflect on the question. They consider different ways of approaching the question. They are silent before speaking. Would everyone in out fast and busy world benefit from being still for a bit before diving into producing? Would teachers? Would students?

What ideas do you have for helping your learners observe, reflect upon, experiment with, read about, and write about this amazing display in 2017 or similar events?
