Can an Ex-Convict Become an Attorney? Powerful Essay from Reginald Dwayne Betts

Colleagues,
I invite you to read Reginald Dwayne Bett's powerful essay, Can an Ex-Convict Become an Attorney: While the essay provides a window into the experiences of individuals during post release and the difficulties they encounter with entering training and higher education.

Betts says, "I’d left prison with enough money for bus fare and a fast-food meal — but without the knowledge of how to enroll in college. It had taken me nine trips to the D.M.V. to get my license, each time learning that a different thing was needed: proof of residence, Social Security card, birth certificate. I’d just learned to search for things on the internet and had barely set up an email account."

As we look for re-entry opportunities for our students, how do we connect them to postsecondary training. After reading Betts' essay, I'd love to hear how you are implementing training and services.

Sincerely,
Kathy Tracey
