Charitable and Family Foundations that Fund Adult Basic Skills Programs

Program Management Colleagues,

This discussion thread will include -- in one place -- an expanding list of family and charitable foundations that fund adult basic skills (including English for adult immigrants) programs. I will try to add one or two new ones each month, and hope that you will generously share others that you know about. Periodically I will compile these, and post them as one message here to make it convenient for those who newly join our community.

To begin, here are seven foundations, in alphabetical order, that I have posted information about earlier:

Cruise Industry Charitable Foundation  http://www.cruisefoundation.org/  The Foundation actively supports programs that meet the needs of economically disadvantaged populations. Proposals that incorporate partnerships with community groups and local organizations are encouraged. Priorities: 1) Communities where the industry does business; 2) Civic and Community Development; 3) Educational Assistance and Training Programs; 4) Environmental Preservation Initiatives; 5) Public Health programs. Eligible: 501c3 nonprofits. Awards: $2,500 to $15,000  (Note: adult basic skills programs that wish to partner with Federally Qualified Community Health Centers for the mutual benefit of patients/adult learners might consider this foundation to support that work.)

Open Meadows Foundation https://sites.google.com/site/openmeadowsfoundation/application-guidelines The foundation supports 501C3 organizations that have a total income less than $75,000. Awards: Under $2,000. Submission dates: 8/15 and 2/15 – Annually. Seeks projects that promote gender/racial/economic justice. The projects must be led by and benefit women and girls. Open Meadows is specifically looking to direct its resources towards changing the world.

Singing for Change Social and Environmental Problem Solving Grants http://www.singingforchange.org/  Created by musician Jimmy Buffet in 1995, Singing for Change offers $1,000-$10,000 grants to politically progressive nonprofits working to address the root causes of social or environmental problems. Focus areas include disenfranchised groups, especially to projects that “help people overcome social or economic barriers to education or employment; promote the empowerment of individuals toward self-sufficiency, and provide opportunities for personal growth that benefit their greater community; and demonstrate human equality and encourage people to cross boundary lines to help others."
