There are tons of workshops to attend at this year’s COABE!  Below are some of Monday’s workshops that I thought might be of interest to members of our CoP who are attending.  If you are presenting, please feel free to share a bit about your presentation.  For those of you not able to attend COABE this year, please feel free to let us know of any workshops you would like others to attend and report back on.

Teaching Civics for the 21st Century

Presented by: Andy Nash

This workshop will consider what it means to be prepared for the 21st Century and focus on the inclusion of civics skills that adults need to live in an increasingly diverse world, hold decision-makers accountable, build community, or organize for change.

 

The Realities of Serving Adult Learners in PA

Presented by: Rosemarie Piccioni

Today’s adult learners are making decisions based on cost, time to complete, support, and the ability to develop a career to earn a better living. This panel of students, faculty, and staff will talk about how to serve students successfully.

 

Is Your Paradigm Worth a Dime?

Presented by: Shandra Shaw

To increase personal achievement, we must evaluate our attitudes and make changes. Engaging in decision-making that results in positive outcomes becomes essential to self-satisfaction. Participants will engage in self-reflective practices designed to improve decision-making and increase employment opportunities.

 

Breaking Avoidance Patterns

Presented by: Dr. Richard Cooper

Categorizing students’ learning styles has become a popular as a way of differentiating teaching strategies. Yet many adult learners do not know how they learn best. They are not attuned to the avoidance behaviors they engage in that limit their success.

 

Implementing a Mutually Adaptive Model of Instruction for ESL Literacy in Community-Based Programs

Presented by: Andrea DeCapua and Dr. Helaine Marshall

Immigrant students with limited formal schooling have assumptions and experiences that are very different from those of their teachers. Our instructional model, the Mutually Adaptive Learning Paradigm (MALP) addresses the issues these students encounter by reducing cultural dissonance and transitioning them to formal schooling. We describe the implementation of MALP in community-based adult language and literacy programs and examine how this culturally responsive model encouraged participation, developed a sense of community, and reduced cultural dissonance.

 

Building Steel Clad Families Using the Strengthening Families’ Protective Factors Framework

Presented by: Emily Wolfe

Join us for this informative and engaging session which focuses on the Strengthening Families Protective Factors Framework. We will explore the five protective factors, sample activities that can be easily implemented, have an opportunity to learn from others and generate a plan for putting the framework into action.

Motivating Adult Learners: Self-Efficacy, Goal Setting, and the Learning Environment

Presented by: Gail Cope

This session will provide an overview of a LINCS webinar series and study circle that focused on adult learner motivation. Research highlights will be discussed and participants will have an opportunity to share strategies they use to enhance learners’ motivation.

 

A Change in Thinking: Supporting Adult Learner Persistence

Presented by: Linda Wolfson

Getting adult learners to persist in their studies can be a challenge. Decisions for Action© is a cognitive skills program that teaches a logical, five-step process used to manage situations that are barriers to participating and persisting in adult education.

 

"Diversity in the Classroom: Creating a Culture of Inclusion and Respect"

Presented by: Dr. Federico Salas-Isnardi

How do we integrate diversity and social justice concepts into our ESL and ABE lessons? Let’s create safe classrooms for all going beyond inclusivity to act on power dynamics through student centered activities and identifying our biases.

 

Effective Transition Planning and Services: What Does that Mean for Students with Learning and Other Non-apparent Disabilities?

35-45% of ABE/GED students have special needs. Generally, transition services focus on students without disabilities. Come examine/apply special learning needs transition services and NRS standards. What might a program addressing all students, with/without disabilities look like? 

 

Adult Education as a Tool for Cross-Cultural Communication and Defusing Conflict

Presented by: Amanda Bergson-Shilcock Bahiya and Cabral-Johnson

Immigrant business owners are often isolated by linguistic and cultural differences from the neighborhoods they serve, sometimes resulting in customer conflicts. Learn how the English for Entrepreneurs model tackles these challenges and helps newcomers and longtime residents alike.

 

Networks for Integrating New Americans

Presented by: Silja Kallenbach and Andy Nash

Adult ESOL programs play an important role in immigrant integration. This workshop will provide an overview of a new, national initiative and engage participants in discussions about promising practices and issues related to strengthening immigrants’ linguistic, economic, and civic integration.

 

Strengthen the Bridge to Effective Family Engagement

Presented by: Rose Gioia-Fine

In this interactive session participants will review the research on the powerful impact of meaningful family engagement on the literacy development of children. Participants will explore their role in supporting parents as partners in their children's education. Effective strategies and the use of authentic texts such as the Parent Roadmaps to the Common Core, in lesson planning, will be discussed. Participants will leave with personal action steps to improve their practice.

Integrating Soft Skills into ELL Instruction to Enhance Employment Opportunities

Presented by: Jane Eguez and Lori Howard

Adult education providers must prepare ELL students for transition to employment and career training. Explore how to support learners with limited job experience/education utilizing an employer-driven system that contextualizes workforce skills training and includes employer-recognized soft skills and academic assessments.
