Computer Science Education Week, December 8-14, 2014

Happy Computer Science Education Week!  Do you know a student who might be interested in trying to write code?  Some activities this week could be a key to learning.  Check out this resource: http://csedweek.org/about

President Obama and others met earlier this week to write some code: http://www.whitehouse.gov/blog/2014/12/08/celebrating-computer-science-education-week-kids-code-white-house

Are there other resources or activities that you might suggest?

Hi Susan:

I succumbed to the Angry Birds Coding activity on this page:  http://code.org/learn  It's designed for ages 3 years-103 years and is so much fun.

The page has several coding options including one that doesn't require a computer at all but uses pencil, paper, and paper cups.  Students pair off.  One student draws a picture of how she/he wants a set of paper cups to be stacked.  Then, the student writes a coded message using arrows that describes how to stack the paper cups.  The partner stacks the paper cups using the code and both compare the results to the drawing.  Very cool.  And, a fun way to work on abstract thinking.

Thanks for sharing your experience, Cynthia.  It looks like almost  25 million people have tried the Angry Birds Hour of Code!  There is also a sheet of Teachers' Notes at https://docs.google.com/document/d/1F0VsFzdaspL-5Qx8RCWd1Qt_euuIBmewT6rFOFzniOo/pub

For anyone who knows fans of Frozen, there is also a coding activity at http://code.org/learn, for ages 8+
