Culturally Proficient Teachers in the Corrections Classroom.

Colleagues,

I've been reading a great deal of information on social / emotional learning and cultural proficiency.

What does it mean to be culturally proficient? Cultural Proficiency is defined as the policies and practices in an organization or the values and behavior of an individual, that enable the person or institution to engage effectively with people and groups who are different from them. Check out the framework defining the difference between tolerance and transformation. There is a growing body of research that indicates cultural proficiency is connected to student achievement.

How do we develop culturally proficient teachers in corrections education? What does that look like? I'd love to hear your examples and ideas.

Sincerely,
Kathy Tracey
