Cursive writing difficulty

I have an inquiry from an adult education instructor whose student says she cannot read or write in cursive.  I would appreciate your input on what you know to be connected to this difficulty or what suggestions you have to investigate her difficulties.  She is in an LPN program and will encounter many styles of handwriting in her career.  I have not met her, but want to start the ball rolling in what to ask, observe, or request.  Thanks!

Can you find out if this student can read or write with 'print' materials as opposed to those written in cursive?  Also, is the student a non-native speaker of English?

Aaron,

I don't know enough about the circumstances of the person you wrote about but I just wondered if perhaps this person was in their 20's to early 30's. Many grade schools no longer teach cursive writing anymore. We have had several requests at our adult  literacy center especially for those entering nursing (even at the nursing assistant level) who needed to be taught how to do it before they themselves were able to read it. Cursive writing will soon be a thing of the past unfortunately - but in the meantime some young adults still need to know how to do it. Just a thought!
