Discussion next week (July 7-) on Adult Citizenship Education

Hello, all.

I'm pleased to give you just a bit more information on the discussion we will have next week, July 7-11, on the Adult English Language Learner (ELL) Community of Practice (CoP).

Paul Kim has sent the following additional details about the discussion:

"The USCIS Office of Citizenship will host a weeklong discussion on adult citizenship education. USCIS representatives will share information and resources designed to help adult learners prepare for the naturalization interview and test and highlight promising practices from the field. Topics may include the naturalization test process and teaching objectives, citizenship education content, available adult citizenship education resources, professional development opportunities, and promising practices from the field.

This is a great opportunity for us to learn about the updated test and the procedures for becoming naturalized citizens. I encourage you all to check the CoP daily for resources, discussions, and answers to questions. It seems quite fitting that we will have this discussion right after the Independence Day holiday.

So, this weekend, while you're enjoying  your barbequed hot dogs and hamburgers, listening to concerts, watching parades, or oohing and aahing over fireworks, you might think about some questions you would like to have answered by Paul Kim and his colleagues at the Office of Citizenship. As he told us above, these might be questions about the test, the process, resources, promising practices, or  professional development opportunities.

I already know a question I have:

I have heard that the citizenship test actually begins when the examiner calls the applicant's name to be intereviewed . For example, the applicant's ability to respond appropriately to the examiner/interviewer's "small talk," and so on, is considered part of the exam. Is this true?

Looking forward to a robust discussion next week!

Hi, Everyone –

Thank you for the introductions, Miriam! We are excited for our upcoming discussion on adult citizenship education. The topics should be helpful for adult educators and for community-based organizations that support immigrant communities. Additionally, it will be a great opportunity to hear your thoughts and to share promising practices.

Many thanks,

Paul Kim
