Do comments at end of online science articles impair readers scientific literacy?

Science teaching colleagues,

Do your students read about science online? If so, do they read the comments at the end of articles? Are they influenced (perhaps in bad ways) by the comments? If so, how do you address this problem? What else do you think is important to promote "science literacy"?
