Does technology keep our babies safe?

Where is the intersectionality between marketing and consumer products, health literacy, technology, and science? Today, it seems to be in the product development of technlogy driven tools and apps designed to provide parents ease of mind as it relates to the safety of their infants and toddlers. Consider the increase in wearable baby monitors that track a baby's breathing and heart rates and send the information to a designated smartphone. Experts agree that these apps offer little accuracy and cause undo amounts of stress for parents. Live Science published an article debunking the benefits of these devices. Yet, parents are flocking to these devices in an attempt to provide a healhy environment for their babies.

  • What does this overuse of technology mean for our students?
  • How do we prepare students to undertand the value of technology in every day life while debunking the claims that technology can keep our infants and toddlers safe?
  • How do we raise health literacy awareness with our students so they don't rely on inappropriate tools such as these?

I'd live to hear your thoughts.
