A synopsis of my presentation at the Philadelphia Literacy Conference: I have been an ESL teacher for more than 25 years and I have written a series of texts which were used for a free website launched in January of 2004. PUMAROSA.COM is a bilingual site for Spanish speaking adults, and focuses on phonetics to aid in pronunciation. It is used in many computer labs in the US and serves as an excellent teacher’s aid and as a transition to an English Only class.
I have continued to add to and promote my program so that it now includes videos on YouTube, a WIKI SPACES website for teachers, lessons on Facebook, a Wix page, and the use of WhatsApp in a non-formal ESL course.
In February I began using WhatsApp for English as a Foreign Language study groups, connecting lessons from my websites. Currently there are three groups of about 40 participants each.
In addition to English classes, students are also able to study for tests on Citizenship, Driver’s License, GED and any particular subject they need, such as Nursing.
Many immigrants have been trained in various professions but when they arrive here they are not eligible to work in their field due to a lack of English skills or the need to pass certain tests. Often they work in low paying jobs and do not have time to attend adult education classes.
But Mobile devices allow them to study when they want, and can be part of a Distance Learning program offered by any adult education agency.
At the same time, WhatsApp is an excellent tool for WORKPLACE ESL any company can set up programs utilizing WhatsApp for practical on-site tasks, and also for employee training.
