Facing History and Ourselves found very effective

Colleagues,

There isn't a LINCS Community of Practice that focuses on social studies education, or for that matter on high school equivalency exam preparation, so I am posting this on a couple of CoPs where I think there may be some interest in research-based practices in teaching history.

Facing History and Ourselves is an education program, primarily for secondary schools, but also available to adult education programs. For nearly four decades it has helped young people learn about the Holocaust, and also about the conditions of ethnic violence, racism and anti-semitism, that have led to massive slaughter in Cambodia, Armenia, Rwanda and in other countries. The program reaches three million secondary school students annually. Although it has been evaluated in the past, "Columbia University journal Teachers College Record has published new data that show Facing History is a very effective program — for both teachers and their students." You can read about this at http://www.wbur.org/2014/05/08/facing-history-ourselves-study-holocaust?utm_source=cc&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=nwsltr-14-05-08

I wonder if your adult education program has used Facing History and Ourselves and, if so, what your experience has been.
