I have posted a new article, "Formative Assessment Practices of a Teacher of Occupation-related Basic Math in an Integrated Education Program" on my Adult Literacy Education blog at https://davidjrosen.wordpress.com/. It's a lightly edited excerpt from a chapter of the book, Teaching, Learning and Assessment for Adults Improving Foundational Skills, co-authored by Inge De Meyer and me. The chapter focuses on case studies in formative assessment in adult basic skills education in Belgium. It was published in 2008 by the international Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). The article is a description of an adult basic skills math teacher who teaches in a math lab, and who focuses on occupation-related math skills, using formative assessment and a learner-centered, blended learning model that incorporates some online instruction.
I hope you will read, and perhaps share with your teaching colleagues, this short, but richly descriptive article. You may be surprised to learn about an adult education math teacher in (Flemish) Belgium whose practices and approach are similar to your own. You may find some of the formative assessment strategies she uses new, and intriguing. You may (or may not) like the way she assesses and teaches math, and how she uses technology. You may be surprised at this IET model that was in practice in Belgium a decade ago that might be relevant in the U.S. today. There may be one sentence in the description of what this teacher does, and how she does it, that intrigues you.
