Cultural Competence in the Adult ELL Classroom: A Funds of Knowledge Approach (SC30)
May 8, May 22, June 5, 2013
3:30 - 5:00 PM EST
Facilitated by: Dr. Kathleen Williams

This ELL-U study circle builds on the increased understanding of culture developed in the online course, The Role of Culture in the Education of Adult English Language Learners [edited by admin to fix broken link] (OC04). In particular, it explores in greater depth how a ‘funds of knowledge’ approach (Moll et al. 1992) can enhance the language learning experience of adult English language learners (ELLs) by helping them to build on what is cognitively familiar (Genzuk 1999).

Applying the perspective that students’ cultural backgrounds are assets rather than deficits, participants will explore the unique funds of knowledge that adult ELLs bring to the classroom from their homes and communities. Participants may conduct this ethnographic exploration through visits to homes, neighborhoods or places of business; they may choose to learn more about community life in the countries from which their students have emigrated; or they may engage in thoughtful interviews and discussions with their students and members of their students’ families and communities.

While interacting with other teachers engaged in similar ethnographic explorations, study circle participants will discuss and analyze what they have learned about the rich life experiences and funds of knowledge their adult students bring to the language learning process. They will also design learning activities that tap into this knowledge, and they will create plans for incorporating this approach into their teaching practice.
