Brooke, thanks for reminding us of this day worth celebrating!  When I was still teaching adult basic education, we always celebrated this day.  We used pie and cake pans of various sizes to measure the volume of pie/cake we would be eating, depending upon the way the food was cut into pieces.  (So we were practicing measurement skills as well).  For simplicity's sake, we would make the outside edge of a piece of pie a straight edge rather than curved, so as to use formulas for triangles/cones/pyramids.  We also "pretended" that icing/topping on a pie or cake was so thin as to be almost two-dimensional, so as to figure the area of the icing on each piece.    Does that make sense?  We often ended the session by eating pie and cake, too!

Cheers, Susan
