Health Literacy Month

October is Health Literacy Month. Many people have been asking about ways to raise awareness this year. There is no right or wrong way to participate. What's important is that you consider the learning needs of your intended audience along with goals of your organization, association, school, library, business, or other group hosting a Health Literacy Month event. And then highlight the importance of understandable health communication in whatever ways you deem best. To help, I will gladly send you two files (one a .jpeg, the other a .gif) of the official Health Literacy Month logo along with permission to use. Just email me at helen@healthliteracy.com

Health Literacy Month has been happening worldwide since 1999. How will YOU make a difference this year?

Hello Helen

I will start or better I hope I can start my Health Literacy project in Austria / October 2013.

How can I do this with low budget? Which activity is good or useful to get attention?

Is there any "HL-Month-Network" to join? That could be the first step to establish this in our country.

Thanks to Helen.

Alex

Hi Alex,

I admire all you are doing to raise awareness about health literacy. There is no right or wrong way to participate in Health Literacy Month. I recommend that you begin by looking at your audience (such as whether they are professionals, the public, or community organizations) and teaching goals (such as what health literacy is, why it matters, or what people can do). Once you are clear on this, then it should be fairly straight-forward to figure out ways to do so even on a low budget. There is no Health Literacy Month Network that I am aware of.

For Health Literacy Month 2013, I propose the theme of "Be a Health Literacy Hero." This is about taking action in how we communicate about health. To learn more about Health Literacy Month go to www.healthliteracymonth.org
