How do you balance listening, speaking, reading and writing?

Hello colleagues, I've often said that the best advice I was ever given as a new teacher (many years ago!) was to strive to balance listening, speaking, reading and writing in my instruction. In fact, this principle still guides my practice today. What do you see as the benefits of striving for this balance? What are some practical examples you can share?

Here's a interesting article by Sharon McKay and Kirsten Schaetzel from the LINCS collection that focuses on the importance of interaction in acquiring English. How do the authors integrate reading and writing into the listening and speaking activities they recommend? Are there activities in this piece that you use in your teaching? What has worked well?
