How effective are commercial software programs for learning language?

Hello colleagues, To my knowledge, there have been few, if any, studies assessing the effectiveness of commercial language learning software with adults who are learning English in an immersion context. However, there have been a few studies of adults who have used commercial software programs for learning other languages.

In a recent article in the journal Language and Language Teaching, Jeff McQuillen summarizes some of the findings on the effectiveness of these commercial programs. McQuillen was interested in learner persistence and completion of levels. How many people would you guess actually complete enough of a program to advance a level? 90%? 80%, 70%? 60? 50%? less than 50%?
