How have you ...?

Hello colleagues, I am convinced of the importance of making assessment criteria visible to students. How have you done so in your classroom?

I always want to let students know what excellence looks like and what is expected. In my classroom, I have found that involving students in establishing that criteria can be a valuable activity. For instance, I might engage the class in a discussion to develop the criteria for student presentations. By involving students in this way, they have an in depth understanding and more ownership of their learning. Students have contributed to the development of rubrics and checklists for various kinds of assignments, including writing, student presentations, digital stories, posters, and even for assessing their small group work.

How have you shared assessment criteria with your students? What are your thoughts about involving students in developing that criteria?

Best, Susan
