How to Teach Digital Literacy

T & L Colleagues,

Especially now that WIOA includes the need for programs to teach digital literacy, there is, and undoubtedly will increasingly be, interest in how programs are planning to teach, or already are teaching, these skills.

1) How are you teaching digital literacy?

2) Do you start with a digital literacy skills assessment? If so, what do you use?

3) Do you have a digital literacy curriculum? If so, what do you use?

4) Have you figured out how to systematically integrate key digital literacy skills in other kinds of learning, for example in reading, writing, numeracy/math, English language learning or other content areas? If so, please tell us what you do.

I recently read an Edsurge article, Three Techniques for Teaching Digital Literacy on teaching digital literacy to elementary school students. I was intrigued by the first two strategies: 1. Teach How to Mindfully “Read” New Media, and 2. Help Students Become Makers and Tinkerers--of text. I would also be interested to hear your thoughts about these.

Eagerly awaiting the first reply (of what I hope will be many replies!)
