How To's: Tips for using this Community

Hi Everyone,

I am starting this thread to discuss how to do certain key things on this new site. Please comment, add, or ask questions!

First one:

Responding to one person directly:

Tammy asked about answering directly to one person instead of to the whole group. We don't have to put our signature lines after each post because that information should be on our Profile.

If you want to respond directly to a person, click on their name or their picture and it will take you to their profile. On the upper right, below the picture box, you can click on "Contact [this person]" and send them a direct email.

I want to suggest that you all explore the My LINCS tab on the new LINCS Community. (It's right on the top blue bar.) I think if you use this as your main homepage for this site, it will be much easier to use.

From here you can do these things:

  • See your Activity Stream: This shows you all the messages from the group or groups you are subscribed to. You can also see just the unread messages, or ones that you have bookmarked by clicking on those respective tabs.
  • Check or change your Profile.
  • Edit your account settings, (including your picture) or notification alerts. (Under picture box on upper right.)
  • See all of your own contributions to the group.

Please take a look at this and see if it makes the site more manageable!

Let me know what you think!

Hi, Julie,

I did what you suggested and went to My Lincs. I see only about 5 messages, all from today. Where do I find others posted last week, especially those I read? They seem to disappear after I open them rather than staying in my Inbox like when it was an e-mail system. Any ideas?

Thanks!

Audrey

Hi Audrey,

Mine does show all of them if I scroll down. They should be there! Try going to the Health Literacy group page, then click on Discussions. Do you see the other stuff there?

Let me know if the older messages really are gone because they should be there. Then I will ask the tech people!

Julie

Hi Audrey,

If you have any technical problems, such as the posts not appearing in the My LINCS tab, please use the "Contact Community Support" link on the Health Literacy home page to report any technical issues. This will be the quickest and most efficient way to resolve technical issues.

Thanks!

Please fill out your Profile so we can all see what you do!

To fill out your Profile: Click on MyLINCS at the top on the blue bar. Then click on the Profile tab under your name. Fill out the information and click on Save.

Oddly, you go to a different place to upload your picture. To add a picture, click on Edit my account, which is under the picture box on the MyLINCS tab. This is also where you set your notificationsf or when you get an email alert of  new messages.

Please put a picture up if you can--it IS nice to see faces in this online world!!!

Hi Everyone,

I know it's a big concern that you are used to getting messages in your mailbox and now there is a new site to log into. Well, fear not!!  There is a way to mangage this Community so it is almost the same as how we used the discussion lists.

If you log into the LINCS Community once and save your settings on your computer, it should automatically log you in. I'm not sure if this will work for all email platforms, but mine does not time out at all!

How to Set it Up:

  1. Click on MyLINCS at the top on the blue bar.
  2. Then click on > Notification Settings, which is under the picture box in the upper right.
  3. Click on > Edit Your Notification Settings. The tabs at the top of this page are Account, Password, Work Information and Personal Information. Make sure you are in the in the Account tab.
  4. Scroll down to Messaging and Notifications Settings.
  5. Set the Default Send Method to "Send me an email"
  6. Set the Default Send Interval to either "Immediately", "Twice Daily Digest" or "Daily Digest".
  7. You can also Customize your notifications, so you get ones from certain threads immediately and others less often [Note: This site allows you to "Subcscribe" to certain threads of conversation, but not necessarily all of them.

What Will Happen:

  • Now you will get messages in your Mailbox.
  • They will be from <LINCS-Community-do-not-reply@lincs.ed.gov>, and the Subject will have at least a portion of the Subject Line from the post.
  • When you open the email and click on the Read more link, it will take you straight to the conversation. If you have logged in before (even days ago) on the same computer, it should go right there and you should not have to log in again!

Try it out and let us know how it works!
