HSE 2014 Professional Development, and HSE 2014 PD videos

PD Colleagues,

One of the hottest issues in professional development this year -- and likely in the years to come -- is the 2014 High School Equivalency (HSE) exams. States choose which exam will lead to their equivalency certificate or diploma. While most states that have already announced their choice have chosen the GED test, New York state has chosen a test developed by CTB McGraw Hill (I have been told this is the TASC. Does anyone know for sure?), New Hampshire and (I think) Montana have chosen a new ETS HSE test, and some states have not yet announced their decision. Anyone have more updated information?

All the HSE exams are aligned with the Common Core State Standards, so learning about these standards should be a PD priority. The Office of Vocational and Adult Education (OVAE) has just released what looks to be a very useful "core of the core" paper called College and Career Readiness Standards for Adult Education" by Susan Pimental at MPR Associates. Reading this paper would be a good place to start for adult educators who want to prepare students well for any of the three exams. It's available at: http://lincs.ed.gov/publications/pdf/CCRStandardsAdultEd.pdf

Minnesota has been working on HSE Professional development for 2014, and I hope that our MN colleagues will post here some of the great information they presented at the AALPD COABE Pre-conference session and at COABE sessions.

As many here know, I am interested in video for professional development. Although my primary interest is authentic classroom videos (see the MLoTS web site, http://mlots.org ,  a "video window" on other adult educators' classrooms), I am also interested in other ways that video can be used for professional development, so I have compiled a list of (mostly under 5-minute) videos on the GED2014, some intended for teachers, some for learners, teachers and others, all potentially useful in professional development. I hope this list of videos in its present form is helpful, and I also hope if you know of other useful HSE 2014 (and onward) professional development videos that should be added to the list that you will let me know. This will soon become a page on The Literacy List http://home.comcast.net/~djrosen/newsome/literacylist.html  I also hope that as new HSE PD videos are developed that you will post information about them here or email the links to me at djrosen123@gmail.com.
