ICYMI: August in Review

Friends,
I'd like to highlight our August discussions.

We revisited the conversation about employment and poverty with a resource about expanding opportunities through middle-skills education.

Then, we explored why people make ‘bad’ decisions with our guest speakers sharing research on the scarcity mindset At the heard of the scarcity mindset is the attribution of bad decision making in the context of scarcity and is the antithesis of a deficit perspect which places blame on the individual characteristics. Along these lines, we revisited the discussion on fault tolerance.

We also had guest experts share their tips and strategies on how to facilitate webinars in an engaging manner using YouTube Live. Highlights from tips shared include:

  • Have a team with at least one presenter and one moderator is essential.
  • One best practice of a moderator is to have the YouTube Live meeting window open on one device (preferably a PC) and then having the YouTube video playing on another device. This allows the moderator to ensure that the screen is constantly shared to viewers.
  • Our presenters have gotten very creative about how to engage viewers. They have used live polling and chat questions as well as simply adding “body breaks” for viewers to stand up and just move around for 30 seconds.
  • Additionally, webinars should be short. Our webinars are around 30 minutes long. A presenter should incorporate viewer engagement at least once every 10 minutes. This helps viewers fight the temptation to “multitask” and wander to other projects during the webinar.

I hope you enjoyed the discussions. Revisit the topcis you found relevant to your world and let me know other topics you would like to discuss in the upcoming months.

Sincerely,
Kathy Tracey
